Hints

The Curse Of Humanrah

We have provided some hints for our games.

Box 1

DIARY

Could the tally lines in the front of the diary represent something other than numbers?

If you have now found the word that the numbers of the tally chart represent you should be able to decrypt the writing on the back page of the diary, for more help look at how to solve vigenere ciphers on the CosyKiller blog page.

SHAPES CODE

Check your diary, are there any shapes in this code you can see in there?

The shapes appear in one of your site maps.

RUNE CODE

Keep hold of this, you will need it further into the story.

TRACING PAPER

Hold onto this, you will need it when you get further into the story.

Box 2

RUNE HINTS

What happens if you fold your paper?

Box 3

GRID ABOVE FAO HARRIET

You will need the diary from box one in order to solve this.

This is a directional code, check the CosyKiller blog page if you're still stuck.

HIEROGLYPHS

Though the notes on this says it isn't hieroglyphs it might still be worth researching the hieroglyphic alphabet, could C5 mean something?

The note is written in hieroglyphs but there is also a Caesar shift of 5 (this is what C5 represents)

Look for a familiar pattern which forms a name you know from the story so far.

Box 4

NEWSPAPER

An advert in the paper is surrounded by Morse Code

Think back to box three's hieroglyphs puzzle, could something similar have been done here?

A Caesar shift of 4 has been used on the morse code.

RUNES PUZZLE

You are still missing an element you need to solve this.

Box 5

SHAPES PUZZLE

You may have seen a similar puzzle in box 1, think back to how you solved this. Is there another part of the diary that is almost the same?

The symbols you're looking for match up with the Site B trench plan.

TELEGRAM

This uses a knock code with the key words 'CAIRO' and 'EGYPT', information about knock codes can be found on the CosyKiller blog, it may however be easier to use letter substitution.

The alphabet used in this knock code is not written (ABCD…) try looking for your STOP. This will be eight letters which repeat more than once in the telegram used to separate sentences, try splitting the code into letter pairs as they appear.

Your STOP is RYCEIERG. S=RY, CE=T, IE=O and RG=P

First word is: PAYTON.

Box 6

RUNES

Runes from earlier boxes can now be solved. As some pages have been crumpled the runes may not always line up perfectly, there may also be some folding required.

TOMB

Although hieroglyphs have been used so far in the story could this be in a different language? Try looking at hieratic script.

Box 7

NEWSPAPER

Hold onto this you will need it when you reach box 9.

"SECRET" PAPERS

You will need both to solve the cipher, the cipher used is a column cipher, and the key word you will need has been underlined.

To decrypt a column cipher you will need to put the letters of your code word into alphabetical order and number them 1, 2, 3… For this cipher your code word is "Goddess" so it important when you are trying to solve the top line of your grid is D1, D2, E3, K etc.

Remember that column ciphers can be written both horizontally and vertically, for a vertical column cipher it is important that you count the characters in your cipher and divide it by the letters used in your code word to find the number of rows you need. Characters/Letters in code word = Amount of rows

Box 8

TELEGRAM

You may have recognised this cipher as being a knock code, like the one seen in Box 5, this one however is a little trickier as there is no STOP used, try looking for words/names that have been seen in the story.

YL=E

COIN

Keep hold of the coin and the drawing it lines up with, you'll need this later in the story.

Box 9

LETTERS

There are two codes hidden within the letters Lawrence has sent Stanley, make sure you read them carefully and keep an eye out for things that may have been underlined or listed.

PAPER FOLDING

If you are struggling to fold the paper correctly try practicing with a napkin or something similar first, your finished product should look like an iris.

PAPER STRIP

This is a Scytale and though it is a little fiddly, if you wrap the paper around your pencil, being sure to line up the letters, you will be able to read the message.

NEWSPAPER

Think back to things you may have received in earlier boxes but couldn't use yet, do any of this match up with the newspaper at all?

In order to find the hidden code in the newspaper you will need the tracing paper from the diary in box 1.

The first word should line up to read "urgently".

Box 10

Telegram

Box 9s lotus flower folding should help you understand how to solve this telegram, unlike previous boxes it does not use a Knock Code.

A vigenere cipher has been used in this telegram, think back to box one or check the CosyKiller blog if you're unsure how to solve.

Your key for this vigenere is "SphinxGiza".

Memo

Try looking at pigpen in order to decode the message sent from Kit Walkham.

Box 11

TELEGRAM

Although telegrams have been seen before in the story making use of both knock codes and vigenere ciphers, this telegram uses a column cipher.

Both telegrams begin with "KIPLING IF" followed by numbers, this links to the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling.

For the telegram which says "foursix" besides Kipling you need to go to the fourth line of the poem and look for the sixth word – this will give you the word "Doubting" which is the key you will need to solve this cipher.

Box 12

MEMO "17th MARCH"

In order to decode this message, you will need the coin and the sheet of paper it goes with from box 8.

Ensure the scarab on the coin touches the scarab on the paper. Where do the arms of the figure point?

The right arm points to the 4th and the left arm points to the 3rd, this means you need to count four letters from the right, and three letters from the left. Following this Jarred would become R, and Chickens would become E.

TELEGRAM

This message has been encoded using a vigenere cipher, this one has a stop.

The key to decrypting this cipher is the word "ANUBIS".
